My interest in walking in general and mountain walking in particular started in September 1985 when I was invited to join a 3-day AIU Japan company trip to Hakuba Oike in the Northern Alps, and nearly 40 years later I stil do big walks. The latest, in 2023 were the Alta Via 1 route in the Italian Dolomites (118 km in 9 days with 7,000 m of ascent) and the Via Francigena pilgrimage Lucca to Rome (416km in 18 days with 7,000 m of ascent). With age catching up with me and a few health problems walks are likely to be less ambitious in te future.
