The Practical

Having explored the GR131 on Lanzarote with KE Adventure Travel in September last year, I was keen to return to the Canary Islands to explore La Gomera and Tenerife.

KE Adventure Travel:-

Described as the “Canary Island time forgot,” La Gomera offers the perfect walking landscape with dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, hidden villages, volcanic peaks and a spectacular coastline. Lying just 30 kilometers off the coast of Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean, the island is a botanical treasure with centuries-old luxuriant Laurel forests clothing the landscape and the beautiful Garajonay National Park described as La Gomera’s “green crown.” A biodiversity hotspot for flora and fauna, this Canary Island offers a real “off the beaten track” walking holiday due to towering volcanic ridges and deep gorges limiting road access to parts of the island. We start in the rich laurel landscape of the Garajonay National Park which offers superb views across to El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Next we explore and hike through the stunning valleys of Rey and Loros, home to potters, terraced fields and palm groves before walking to the chapel of Santa Clara. After Santa Clara comes a holiday highlight, an ascent of Roque El Cano. This spectacular volcanic outcrop overlooks the famed deep valleys or “barrancos.” Finally we follow volcanic paths which snake down to La Caleta beach, before spending an excellent day hiking along the GR131, the fantastic long distance footpath which connects the complete Canary Islands. Home to dry-stone walling, banana, papaya and mango plantations plus ‘El Silbo,' one of the world's few remaining whistling languages, La Gomera is a true walker's paradise. If you're looking for a holiday that offers excellent temperatures for year round walking, six of the best walks on the island, a rich variety of trails and accommodation, quaint villages, breath-taking coastal views and an amazing undiscovered landscape, then La Gomera, the Jewel of the Canary Islands is the perfect choice!
