The Refuge of Vegarredonda is located in the sheepfold of the same name, in the Western Massif or Covadonga, within the National Park of the Picos de Europa, at an altitude of approximately 1460 m.

It is a construction of the year 1987, although previously there was a small refuge located a little higher than the current one, and that served as a Polvorín during the Spanish Civil War.

The refuge belongs to the Principality of Asturias and is managed by the Federation of Mountaineering of the Principality (FEMPA). If you have the Mountain Federation License you can enjoy a significant reduction in the rates of the Refuge, under the Refuge Reciprocity Agreement.

The Refugio de Vegarredonda is open all year, has an excellent food service and canteen, as well as blankets and sleeping bags for rent. The shelter is provided by horses in summer and a backpack in winter.

The new guard, Fco. Javier Malo, faces this challenge with a wide experience, for his already recognized work in the previous refuge he ran, the Refuge of Vega de Ario, in which he was for five years. He also has more than ten years of experience as a mountain guide and is a professor at the EAMPA (High Mountain School of the Principality of Asturias).

From the Refugio de Marqués de Villaviciosa in the Vega de Ario, we want to offer the mountaineers a quiet place where they can rest, recover their strength and spend a very pleasant and homely time in the company of the new guards, who will be happy to assist you as best as possible .

The Ándara massif extends from southwest to northeast, dividing into two slopes at the point where its greatest heights are concentrated, around the Cirque de Ándara. The river Duje, to the west, separates this massif of Los Urrieles and the river Deva, to the east, marks the eastern limit of the Picos de Europa. Inside there are several remains of mining operations (mines of Mazarrasa, Evangelista, La Providencia, ...) currently abandoned, and the remains of the buildings attached to this activity are still visible. It is easy to find also the abundant bocaminas, some of them hindered to avoid the entrance of the cattle to the same ones. There is a mountain refuge, the Casetón de Ándara, which facilitates access to the massif and, a few minutes away from it, in the direction of the Valdominguero peak, lies the old bed of the Ándara lake. This lake, one of the largest that populates the Picos de Europa, was accidentally dried during the aforementioned mining activities, probably because of some blasting.

The first alignment of mountains that can be seen from the south are the Avenas Summits. The most southern summit of this set is the Castro Cogollos (1,692 m), then there is the peak of the Ox (1,870 m), the Joracón de la Miel (1,902 m), the peak of the Sandy Channel (1,882 m) and the peak of the Corvo (1,878 m). Through the Collado de Cámara you can access the core of the Eastern massif. Following the southwest-northeast alignment appear first the Picos de Cámara (2,050 m), followed by the peak Pozán (2,188 m), also known as the Jiso, whose southeast ridge forms the most important climbing route of the Macizo de Ándara. Continuing towards the north, important heights appear, such as the Prao Cortés (2,288 m) and the Cortes peak (2,373 m). Also the Cueto la Encina (2,193 m), which gives way to the Morra de Lechugales, maximum height of this massif with 2,444 meters of altitude. Further north are the Jierru peaks (2,422 m) and the Jierru pike (2,421 m), also known as the Evangelista or Tiro de la Infanta. At this point there is a bifurcation, which to the north goes to the peak Valdominguero (2,265 m), the Malatas and the Cuetu la Vezada, which will give, to the west, the vegas of Sotres. Following the Valdominguero peak to the north are the pikes of Jou without Tierre (2,159 meters the highest of the two), the Tejau cave (2,129 m), the Boro picu, the Cuevas the Clabreros and, finally, the Fuente Soles pike , that is going to give to Jito de Escarandi, northern limit of the massif of Ándara. From the Valdominguero peak towards the northeast there are other peaks, such as the Soriano peak (2,161 m) and the Cuentos de los Senderos and la Ramazosa (both around 1,900 m), in the vicinity of the Casetón refuge. Andara On the other side of the refuge rises the Pico del Macondíu, of 1,999 meters. Noteworthy are the peaks that lie east of the Morra de Lechugales, such as Silla del Caballo Cimero (2,436 m) and south of it, the Tabla del Pino (2,154 m). From the pike of Jierru extends a cordal to the northwest that runs through summits such as the Peak of the top grajal (2,349 m), the peak of Grajal de Abajo (2,248 m), the Castle of Grajal (2,091 m), the Rasa de the Inexhaustible (2,284 m) and the Devil's Cave (2,267 m), also known as La Junciana. To the east of the Junciana rises the peak of the Sacred Heart, of 2,214 meters and with great significance because since the last year of the 19th century a ceremony has been celebrated at the summit by the local people. From this summit in the east, through the Joncada range (1,988 m), there are peaks such as the peak of Jonfría (2,067 m), the Castillín (2,042 m), the Alto de los Novillos (2,033 m) or, in the eastern end, the peña del Roblo (1,775 m).

Taking as reference the peak of the Sacred Heart, other heights rise to the north, such as the peak of Samelar (2,227 m), the Canto de la Concha (2,093 m), the Alto de las Verdianas (2,024 m) and, already below of the two thousand meters, the Becerreras, the Becerreras and the Columbros. From the top of the Verdianas and through the pass of La Llaguna (1,948 m), summits such as the peak of the Agudinas, 1,976 meters high, stand at the eastern end of the Ándara massif. The next summits (the peak of the Steel, the peak of the Tarabillera, the Paña peak, the Llosa and the Ciruenzo Mayor) progressively lose altitude until reaching the thousand and three hundred meters and reach the place where, on the east, they end the Picos de Europa.

The refuge consists of two floors with wood-based wall covering.
The plant is distributed in:
· kitchen with direct access through the entrance door to the refuge.
· Living room - dining room connected to the kitchen. It has a wood stove, portable ladder access to the undercover floor and wooden benches and tables.

The undercover floor is attic with a similar surface area as the ground floor, with which it communicates through a hole in the floor and a portable ladder perfectly anchored. The floor is made of wood and the layout is as follows :
 · Large bedroom for 18 people with mattresses on the floor.
· Separate bedroom of the guard located at the bottom of the floor.

The toilet (WC) is outside, about 30 m to the right as it leaves the shelter. It is a metal house, healthy, with running water, toilet paper, mirror and shelves.

In summer the guard installs a shower on the outside, next to the shelter
