10th November 2026

We will leave Castellaneta walking through expanses of olive trees and small country roads, heading towards the Montecamplo nature reserve. We will gradually climb the hills, with views that embrace the Gulf of Taranto, Basilicata and the Calabrian mountains.

We will cross a large area of Mediterranean scrub and medicinal plants until we take a spectacular path that runs for miles on the edge of the Laterza canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Europe. After passing the Lipu Oasis, we will reach Laterza, where we will spend the night and have dinner with local products.

Laterza

Laterza is a comune of around 14,500 inhabitants in the province of Taranto, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. The town sits above one of the deepest karst ravines in Europe, a geological fracture that has defined its geography and economy for centuries. Three things set Laterza apart from other Puglian towns of similar size: its bread, its maiolica ceramics — white tin-glazed earthenware decorated in turquoise — and that ravine. Knowing what to see in Laterza means understanding how these three elements have always intersected with daily life here.
