My interest in walking in general and mountain walking in particular started in September 1985 when I was invited to join a 3-day AIU Japan company trip to Hakuba Oike in the North Alps, Japan, and nearly 40 years later I have still been doing big walks. In 2023 I did the Alta Via 1 route in the Italian Dolomites (118 km in 9 days with 7,000 m of ascent) and the Via Francigena pilgrimage Lucca to Rome (416km in 18 days with 7,000 m of ascent). With age catching up with me and a few health problems walks are likely to be less ambitious in the future.
