12th November 2026

We will leave the harsh landscape of the gravine to enter a sweeter environment, made of cultivated with wheat, pine and oak forests. We will walk along paths that cross a rich vegetation, we will wade a small stream and then we will go up to the hill on which Montescaglioso stands.

We will reach the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, a symbolic place of the village. The evening will be dedicated to a dinner in a home restaurant with typical dishes and live popular music.

Montescaglioso

From a distance, Montescaglioso reads as a dense mass of pale stone on a ridge, its silhouette broken by the campanile of what turns out to be one of the largest Benedictine abbeys in southern Italy. The road climbs through a landscape of limestone outcrops, clay hills and grain fields — the eastern province of Matera at its most austere and most itself. The town sits at around 361 metres above sea level, home to about 9,241 people who call themselves montesi, and it carries the formal title of città, granted in 2004. But the title matters less than the stone, the abbey, and the long view south toward the Bradano river winding through its valley.
