Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family)

Trollius europaeus thrives in most situations and can carpet entire hillsides with glorious buttercup-yellow goblets in early summer. Deeply divided leaves and stems up to 60 cm (though often considerably shorter)characterise this prolific species of damp meadows and woodland fringes. The close relationship to buttercups is obvious but the globe-shaped flower is very distinct.
