Day 5. - Purdoi Pass to Arabba

24th June 2024

The Purdoi Pass is reached in 45 minutes by Bus 472 from Sport Kostner in Corvara. It is worth doing it for the bus journey alone, as it climbs the Campolongo Pass and winds through spectacular scenery to Arabba and on to the Purdoi Pass. At the pass, Route 601 goes off by Hotel Savoia sign posted for Viel dal Pan. The high point is the Rifugio Sass Beccel at 2,423 m, but the path contours round to the left to Rifugio Fedarola. This is less than 1.5 kilometers from the pass and takes about 40 minutes. Fedarola has recently been renovated and the interior is to "night club" standard...... presumably intended for Apres Ski. A great place for the morning coffee. The path is a wide track as it continues towards Viel dal Pan, and as this forms part of the long distance Alta Via 2 path it is quite busy. You can overnight at Viel dal Pan, and from time you time you see small four-wheel-drive vehicles delivering luggage to the refugio.

The path narrows after Viel dal Pan as it continues eastwards towards Porta Vescovo, where there are two cable cars that descend to Arabba.

There are excellent views of the Marmolada across the valley, and of Lago di Fedaia below. The Alta Via 2 descends towards Lago di Fedaia en route to Malga Ciapela.

We took the 08-18 bus to Purdoi Pass arriving at 09-03; there was no return bus from Arabba until 15-20 so we had plenty of time for a pizza for lunch. The bus stop is next to Cafe Peter, opposite the church.

Passo Purdoi

Most people look at this monument at Passo Purdoi and walk by, assuming it is just another WW1 memorial. In fact it dates from the 1930's and is a monument to The Great Dolomite Road (the Strada del Dolomiti or Dolmitenstrasse), which was completed in 1909.

Route starts in front of Hotel Savoia

Even more people coming up behind!

Bus stop to the right of Bar Peter

One pizza between three of us would have been sufficient! They were enormous!
