Day 28 Villafranca del Bierzo to Vega de Valcarce

Tuesday 4th June 2013

18km - 4 hrs

This was a relatively easy day with only 4 hours of walking, but after the long hot day the day before, and the prospect of the O Cebreiro climb coming up, it seemed sensible to have an easy day and to relax in the afternoon. We departed Villafranca at 7-20 a.m., and chatting away we managed to miss the turn for the Camino down the side of the hotel. We had not gone a hundred yards when a car screeched to a halt, the driver got out, and started gesticulating that we had gone wrong. He was so concerned for us! He then drove to the point where we should have turned off, and got out again to show us the way!

Digby striding ahead. The climb out of Villafranca follows the road, but at least
there is a barrier to protect you from the traffic

But eventually the path goes off into the woods

The new road high above Vega de Valcarce has blighted a lot of properties with road noise

Accommodation Notes

I stayed in a casa rural for 30 euro per night .... El Recanto...... which was immediately under the high road. To register in tis casa rural I had to go across the road to the local bread shop "Panaderia Miguel A. Cerezalez" which handles the paperwork. I was surprised how much low level noise came from the road...... thumps in the ground and a noise like aircraft overhead, but with the windows closed and with earplugs in it did not disturb my sleep. It would be a different matter if you lived there.

Albergue Saracin

Digby and Jane stayed across the road in Albergue Saracin, which was a small modern albergue with good facilities.
