Day 1 Wednesday 16th April 2014

St Jean Pied de Port to Orisson

7 km - 3 hours

Across seven provinces of Spain, east to west. (Courtesy of "The Road to Santiago" by Millan Bravo Lozano)

You don't need a map! Just follow the arrows.
They are everywhere!

Ready for off

Despite all the careful planning, I get the feeling
that this rucksack is a bit overweight at 12 kg!

More rucksacks destined for Santiago de Compostela!

Decision point - right is the Valcarlos Route up the valley and
left is the Napoleon Route over the Pyrennes

Initial start of the climb to Orisson

The lodge at Hunto

Gite Kayola, 800 yards before Orisson and owned by the same person, Jean-Jacques Etchandy

Approaching Orisson Refuge

A well-earned beer!

You meet a lot of different people on the Camino and it was at Orisson that we first met a German named Tayeb Maurer. Over the coming days we got to know him quite well and it was a great pleasure each time we bumped into him. But on our first acquaintance with him at Orisson, we had just entered the dormitory area and he greated us with a hand shake and a pair of ear plugs! A pair for everybody in the room! He explained that he snored. He certainly did! My German is not very good, but I am sure that there must be a word in German for snoring.... something like "Uber-mega-grossen-snorten"! Apologies to Tayeb if he reads this!
