Astorga to Rabanal del Camino

Meson El Llar is a great place for breakfast

It was outside Meson El Llar that I got talking to Evvi, from Texas, who was walking the Camino in Crocs. She assured me that they were easy to walk in and that she had had no problems with blisters. Think I prefer my boots!

At Santa Catalina de Somoza... photo kindly taken by Lucia from Colombia

Heading towards El Ganso

Meson Cowboy at El Ganso. It was here that I sat talking to a young Spaniard named

Rabanal del Camino

It was a nice sunny day in Rabanal del Camino and enjoyable sitting having a beer with John, Chris and Ronni. In the evening we went to the top of the town for a Pilgrim's meal at La Posada d'Gaspar which was really good. John, Henny (a Dutch Professor of Materials Science) and I joined Edith and Debra.

Even though Rabanal del Camino is a small village, it has three churches, if you include the small chapel
of Eremito Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz at the entrance to the village.

The church of Santa María dates back to the 12th century. It has that typical church tower of that area being just a thick wall, but it has quite an unique clock on the tower. The clock was donated by Antonio Canseco y Escudero, (1838 – 1917), who was born in Rabanal. He went to Madrid he invented a clock without weights, donating one to his home village of Rabanal in 1882.

The clock

A monument to Julian Campo, born in Rabanal del Camino on 15th May 1956 who was killed in the fatal train crash in Villada of the intercity train Vigo/A Coruna/Irun. Campo spent much of his life helping the poor of Calcutta.

Leandro and Lucia. Leandro had a beautiful pewter crucifix, as you will see below. He was
giving a small sermon at the evening mass at the church, and as he had his Greek
orthodox church hat with him I asked for a photo of him wearing it.

Evvi was there too, still wearing her Crocs.
