Camino Frances - 2014

Day 8 - Thursday 25th September 2014

Triacastela to Samos and on to Monforte de Lemos

19 km - 4.2 hours

My original plan was to walk to Samos and Sarria, and then take the train to Monforte de Lemos. However, after Samos, this meant walking in the opposite direction to Monforte, and the train was not until later in the day. Hence I had the brainwave of walking direct to Monforte de Lemos from Samos. Unfortunately I did not have a map and my "guesstimate" of the distance turned out to be way out. Hence I compromised and took a taxi from Samos to Rubian, and started he walk to Monforte from there.

Leaving Triacastela early morning

The signs are pretty well beat up, but the path to San Xil goes to the right and the path to
Samos goes to the left
. I had been down to the end of the road to check this the night before.

First glimpse of the Monastery as I approached Samos
(See next page on Samos Monastery)

After a short taxi ride, I headed towards Monforte de Lemos from Rubian along the C 546

The Church at Rubian

Not the ideal walking conditions!

The church at Boveda

The road became more dangerous as I approached Monforte de Lemos, particularly as lorries approached
on some of the bends, so I took a Euro 1-40 bus ride in to Monforte for safety

Coming in to Monforte. I had no problem finding my hotel, the Parador, as the monastery building is high
on a hill and is visible from all directions.
