Day 12

Albergaria a Velha to Oporto

With many more days of rain forecast we decided to bring the curtain down on the first half of the walk, Lisbon to Oporto, and to take the bus to Oporto. We felt we could check into a decent hotel and enjoy the sights in Oporto for a couple of days, and then put all our efforts into completing the second half of the pilgrimage, Oporto to Santiago de Compostela. In fact, many people do not bother starting the pilgrimage in Lisbon; the stage Oporto to Santiago de Compostela is by far the most popular.

Number 14 bus took 50 minutes to Oporto and cost just over 8 euro per person

Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, the first landmark we came across after leaving Oporto bus station. The church is located near Batalha Square. Completed in 1739, the church was built in a proto-Baroque style and features a retable by the Italian artist Nicolau Nasoni and a façade of azulejo tilework. The church is named in honour of the Visigoth, Ildephonsus of Toledo, bishop of Toledo from 657 until his death in 667.
