At the mouth of the River Tweed, Berwick is located midway between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh, on the Main East Coast railway line. Close to the A1, with two international airports and a ferry route to Europe just an hour away, Berwick is perfectly located for day visits, short-breaks or longer stays to explore everything it has to offer as well as Northumberland and the Borders.

The definitive border town, focus of centuries of warfare between England and Scotland, Berwick has the most complete bastioned defences in Northern Europe. A boat-building town from the eighteenth century, and centre of a thriving salmon fishing industry, the cobbled quayside is full of interest and in the summer months you can step back in time and watch the netting of salmon in the Tweed, still taking place from Gardo's Batt, a tradition unique to Berwick.

Berwick is home to a thriving arts and culture scene, including the very successful Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre. Painted by Turner, the town was also a favourite of LS Lowry.

With cliff-top and riverside walks, long sandy beaches, and a lively promenade at Spittal, Berwick is perfect for families and activity breaks and only a short distance from a whole range of attractions, including long-distance walks and cycle routes.
