Starting my walk along Via Cassia towards Insugherata Park. This supermarket is quite close to Hotel Cassia

Marker 17 on the Via Cassia. Traffic is beginning to get heavy

At times I was walking faster than the cars!

Making progress. Via Cassia marker "12 km". The entrance to Insugherata Park is just ahead on the right

Entrance to Insugherata Park. At this point I had done 5.76 km in 1H11

Amazing to find such a wilderness so close to the center of Rome

ALL THE EARTH'S GARDEN IS GREEN

Well, I did not expect that!

Beginning the climb to the exit of Insugherata Park
By this point I had done 10.31 km in 2H23

Passing through a heavily populated tower block complex

This is where you see the uglier side of Rome, something you did not see in Tuscany

The route takes you down Via Trionfale, and at this point goes off to the left. The guidebook mentions that Trionfale is a shorter route but you have to take care with traffic. I went down Trionfale and did not find any difficulty. At one point the traffic goes off to the right on a slip road, but this is the only point where care is needed.

Going down via Trionfale. There is a footpath most of the way.

At this point you have to walk on the outside of a line of parked cars for about 150m

Entrance to Monte Mario Park

First sighting of St. Peter's Basilica from Monte Mario Park.
By this time I had done 15.18 km in 3H30

Route off Monte Mario and down Viale Angelico

Descending from Monte Mario

Arriving at St. Peter's Square after the long walk down Viale Angelico

Honouring my pledge to Tommaso at Castello Tricerchi

Although not the best area of town, I decided to stay next to Roma Termini so that I could get an early morning "Leonardo Express" train to Fiumicino Airport. This takes 32 minutes and costs Euro 14. I bought an open ticket the night before so that I did not have the hassle of queueing for the ticket machine. The train goes from platform 23 or 24.
