Looking back to the Sanctuary at Pancole. We did not go in as there was a mass taking place.

In 1668 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young deaf-mute girl called Bartolomea Ghini. She was cured and thereafter the Mother of God arranged for the provision of her poor family's basic necessities, flour, wine and oil. Thereafter she was venerated as Mother of the Divine Providence. In 1670 the Sanctuary was built but was destroyed by German soldiers in 1944 and reconstructed in 1949. At the centre of the church is the miraculous fresco painted by Pier Francesco Florentino (15th century) which represents the Blessed Virgin Maru breast feeding the Holy Child. For the year 2000 the Santuary has been selected as a place set aside at which the Jubilee Year plenary indulgences can be obtained.

The Sanctuary is 5 kilometers from San Gimignano.

Restaurant

Fabio found a restaurant called Trattoria Chiribiri near Porta San Giovanni and I went there two nights running. The father and son who ran it were an hilarious double act and should have had a career on stage. The food there was very good. The first night (With Fabio and Massimo) I had spaghetti with pesto sauce; On the second night I returned (and Peter and Barbara joined me) for their pasta with black cabbage and gorgonzola sauce. Again superb.
