Romanesque Sant' Antimo

Sant' Antimo is a very old abbey located in the Val di Starcia, at the foot of the medieval village of Castlenuovo dell' Ab bate. The church was built at the beginning of the XII century, but the abbey's origins are more ancient. According to the legend, Sant' Antimo was founded in the IX century, during the Holy Roman Empire of Carlo Magno who built the chapel, named Caroligian Chapel, that nowadays is the sacristy.

Sant' Antimo abbey is one of the highest expressions of romanesque architecture of the XII century. The church's planimetry presents typical features of the churches located on the ancient pilgrim's way.
