As our flight was not until 16-40 hrs we had time to walk up the hill past Hotel Tivoli to Parque Eduardo VII

The Marquis of Pombal Square(Praça do Marquês de Pombal) is a major landmark and traffic hub in Lisbon, located at the northern end of Avenida da Liberdade and adjacent to Eduardo VII Park. It is dedicated to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the powerful 18th-century Prime Minister who led the reconstruction of Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake. At the centre of the square stands an imposing monument inaugurated in 1934, reaching a total height of about 36–40 metres.

Main Statue: A 9-metre bronze figure of the Marquis stands atop a massive stone pedestal. He is depicted with his hand resting on a lion, a symbol of power and leadership, and his gaze is directed toward the Baixa district, which he famously rebuilt.

Symbolic Base: The lower part of the monument is rich with allegorical sculptures:

  • The Earthquake: Jagged rocks and rubble at the base commemorate the 1755 disaster.
  • Reforms: Groups of statues represent his major political, educational, and agricultural reforms.
  • Lisbon Reborn: A female figure symbolizes the city rising from the ruins
