Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin is a crater lake in the Savanne district that has grown in imporatance as a central part of Indo-Mauritian folk culture. It is about 1800 feet above sea level and is situated 2 km to the east of Le Pétrin. It is the sacred place of pilgrimage of Hindus who visit to pray to the diety Shiva on its banks each February on the occasion of Maha Shivaratree. In 1972 water from the Ganges River was poured ceremonially into the lake, and since then the lake has been known as "Ganga Talao" by the island's Hindus.
