Pamplemouses Botanical Garden
The giant water lily - Victoria Amazonica - discovered in 1801 by the German botanist Thaddeaus Haenke and dedicated to Queen Victoria (1819-1901). It was introduced to the Pamplemouses garden by Charles O'Connor in 1927, and is of th Nympheaeceae family from the Amazon basin in Brazil.The diameter of a healthy leaf can reach 3 meters in optimum conditions.
