Northern Spain Trip

Puerto de San Gloria and Llanaves de la Reina

Our intention had been to drive to Posada de Valdeon and then take a very narrow road to Cain, the southern end of the Garganta de Cares or Cares Gorge. However the road was climbing all the way with hairpin bends seemingly every 200 yards, and was quite time consuming and tiring to drive. We drove a mere 20 miles in 45 minutes to reach Puerto de San Glorio, the highest pass in the Picos at 1,609 meters, and then down into Llanaves de la Reina where we had lunch. This was more than enough! We were probably only half way to Cain but decided not to carry on.

A walking trail that leads from Puerto de San Glorio towards Cosgaya

Monumento al Oso, Collado Llesba

Looking down to the car park from the bear monument. The road going off to the left is quite narrow,
is unprotected and has substantial drops to the left!

A bear in the restaurant in Llanaves where we had lunch. I am told
that there are only 30 bears in the Picos and that there is little chance of
seeing one, let alone being attacked by one. So far!

One of the many cows on the roadside (and sometimes on the road!). The inside of their ears are hairy, and when they turn them inside out it looks as though they are wearing earmuffs!

Look out, cow ahead! We also saw a horse on the road, and a rare sighting of a wolf as well
