Avignon

 

  Great city of the Popes and for centuries one of thge most artistic centres of France. Central Avignon is enclosed by medieval walls, built by one of the nine Popes who based themselves in Avignon throughout most of te 14th century. The Palais des Papes dominates the centre of Avignon, and the otrher famous landmark, the Pont d'Avignon or Pont St Brenezet is close by.
