The most renown and populated city after Paris, Marseille has - like the capital - been ransacked many times over the centuries. It has lost its priviledges to sundry French kings and foreign armies, refound its fortunes, suffered plagues, religious bigotry, republican and loyalist terror and ha dits own Commune and Bastille storming. Marseillaise Revolutionaries marching from the Rhine to paris in 1792 to the hymn The Army of The Rhine have its name to "La Marseillaise", later to become the national anthem. |
