Chapter 2.

Joseph Glaseby was baptised in Worksop on 1st June 1722. There is then a marriage recorded on 1st June 1749 at Whitgift, Goole (some 42 miles away from Worksop) between Joseph Glassby and Ann Lumb. They had three children:-

Jonathan Glassby married Elizabeth Booth in Treeton, Yorkshire (south of Rotherham) on 31st July 1771. Jonathan and Elizabeth had 7 children:-

Thomas Glassby, described below, was the second child of Jonathan and Elizabeth.

Not a lot is known about Thomas Glassby. He was a farmer in Denaby (now called Old Denaby) and his estimated date of birth was between 1775 and 1780. The IGI records show that he married Ann Butler on 7th May 1798 at Rotherham, Yorkshire, and that they had nine children. At least there are nine Glassby children born at this time who are recorded as either having a father named Thomas, or a mother and father named Ann & Thomas, who are assumed to all be brothers and sisters.

It is thought that Thomas Glassby died between December 1837 (when he is mentioned as the father on the marriage certificate of his son Richard) and June 1841 when the 1841 Census was taken. The records show only one “Thomas Glassby” or “Thomas Glasby” dying between these dates i.e. “Thomas Glassby Q2 1839 Gainsborough 14 211” which could possibly be him, except that Gainsborough is not that close to Mexborough.

Ann Glassby died in 1842. Her death certificate shows the Registration District of Doncaster, the sub-district of Tickhill, the date of death 17th January 1842 at Conisboro, and that she was Widow of Thomas Glassby, labourer. She died of “Old Age”. Sarah Glassby, of Hooton Roberts, is listed under the section “Signature, description and residence of informant” and is thought to be Richard Glassby's wife.

B.7 Richard Glassby (b. 1809 d. 1870) m. 13 DEC 1837 Sarah Robinson (b. 1811)

Richard (B 7.) was baptised in Mexborough on 24th October 1809. He married Sarah Robinson in Hooton Roberts on 13th December 1837. Richard is listed as a “husbandsman” and his father Thomas Glassby as a “farming man”. Sarah Robinson was the daughter of Martin Robinson, a shoe maker, and his wife Mary Ann Robinson. Sarah was born in Scarborough and was christened on 7th April 1811. The map for 1854 shows that Hooton Roberts was a very small place, nothing more than a small hamlet on a cross road of the Doncaster – Rotherham road. The map shows St John’s Church high on the hill with the Rectory next door, alongside The Hall which is now a pub. On the opposite side of the road, The Wapping leads down to a right angle bend in the road, which leads to Back Lane. In the 1841 census, Richard and Sarah Glassby are shown living at The Wapping; Thomas R Glasby (40, a schoolteacher) is shown living on Church Hill, next to the Rectory, where Chas W. Eyre, the vicar was living - however this entry may be a transcription error as the handwritten original looks like "Thomas R. Glossop". Robert Glassby (Richard's brother) and his wife Ann are also shown living on Church Hill with their 6-month old son Thomas, next door to Thomas R. "Glasby" or "Glossop".

By the time of the 1851 Census Richard and Sarah had moved to Conisborough, and were living in Post Office Street.

In the 1861 Census Richard and Sarah were still living in Post Office Street, Conisborough.

By the time of the 1871 Census, Sarah Glassby is shown as the “Head of Family”, Richard having died. There is a record in the General Registry Office records for a death “Richard Glassby (58) 1870 Q3 Doncaster 9c 375”.

There is no sign of Sarah Glassby in the 1881 Census, nor is there any sign of her death between 1871 and 1881. It is possible that she remarried as there is an entry for a marriage “Sarah Ann Glassby Q2 1875 Woolwich 1d 1190”.

B.8 Esther Glassby

Esther Glassby was baptised in 1812, and very little is known of her. However one piece of information has surfaced which shows that in 1834, at the age of 22, she got into trouble:-

	FEMALE STRENGTH AND FORTITUDE – An inquest was held on Monday, at Dennaby, near Hooten Roberts, on the body of an infant child, under the following circumstances. Esther Glassby, a yound woman, residing as a servant with Mr. Mowbray, of Dennaby, having become the subject of some suspicion, was spoken to at various times by her masterand mistress, but stoutly denied that there was any ground for their surmises. On Saturday morning, however, she was observed by some of the men-servants on the farm, to leave the house between four and five o’clock, and go into the wood. They had noticed that for a day or two before, she was in low spirits, and, supposing that her object was self-destruction, went and informed their master, who set out with them to seek her. In one part of the wood they found a quantity of blood, but saw nothing of Esther. She was at last found at her mother’s house, about a mile from Mr. Mowbray’s, in bed. She was charged with having given birth to a child, but denied it firmly. A surgeon was however sent for, who told her that denials would not deceive him, and insisted peremptorily upon knowing what had become of it. She then owned that she had been delivered in the place where the blood was found, and had carried the body of the child to another part of the wood, and concealed it; she described the place, and a search was made, but in vain. It was then proposed that she should be carried on a bed to point out the place; but she refused, saying, she could go without. She got up, dressed herself, and walked to a part of the wood, about three quarters of a mile distant, and shewed the spot where she had concealed the body. In the morning she must have walked about two miles in the wet, through very rugged parts of the wood. The inquest was adjourned to Thursday, in order to give the medical men time to examine the body, with a view to ascertain whether the child was born alive. The result of the inquest was a verdict, charging the girl with concealment of birth, and she was committed to take her trial at Rotherham sessions.

The Rotherham Sessions were convened on Wednesday 9th July 1834 and Esther Glassby’s case was heard on Thursday 10th.

	The Grand Jury found a true bill against Esther Glasby, for misdemeanour, in concealing the birth of a bastard child. At Denaby, as mentioned in our paper a few weeks ago. She was placed at the Bar, and pleaded guilty to the charge, when the Court sentenced her to be imprisoned in Wakefield House of Correction for the space of twelve calendar months.

This seems a cruel fate for Esther Glassby, and no mention is made of the man that got her in to the predicament. And what were the prospects for a young lady after spending a year in prison? No further mention of Esther have been found in researches todate.

Robert Glassby was born in Denaby about 1813 (There are inconsistencies in the records about his age). He was baptised in Mexborough on 4th May 1814 according to the IGI records.

At some point Robert moved to Hooton Roberts, a small village a couple of miles from Denaby, and became a husbandsman or tenant farmer. Hooton Roberts lies between Rotherham and Doncaster, being 4½ miles from Rotherham and 7½ miles from Doncaster. Robert Glassby married Ann Heppenstall on 8th June 1840. The 1881 Census gives Ann’s birthplace as Letwell, Nottinghamshire, and date of birth as 1819. Letwell is, technically, in Yorkshire although Nottinghamshire is the registration county. She was christened on the 18th April 1819 in Throapham, Yorkshire, which was a hamlet about 3 miles away. She was the eldest daughter of William Heptenstall and his wife Mary (née Mee). The discrepancy in the spelling of the surname is quite common and probably occurred because the “Heppenstall” spelling was more common in the Rotherham area. Robert and Ann’s eldest son, Thomas, was born in Hooton Roberts in 1840 before the family moved to the village of Wroot, situated on the Isle of Axholme in North Lincolnshire. Wroot is 19 miles from Hooton Roberts, and is at the furthest point of Lincolnshire to the west and borders on what was the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1841 the population of the village was 333, and that had only risen to 403 in 1991!

Robert and Ann were married on 8th June 1840 in St. John the Baptist Church in Hooton Roberts. Their first son, Thomas, was born in Hooton Roberts on 12th December 1840, seven months after the date of the marriage. and the family is shown in the 1841 Census as follows:-

Robert and Ann had nine children in all ( 1 born in Hooton Roberts and 8 born in Wroot) between 1840 and 1859; the Glassby name was not indigenous to the area and Robert and Ann were “incomers”. There are no Glassby burials in Wroot, apart from the son Arthur who died a few months after birth. Robert and Ann had eight sons and one daughter. Thomas was born in December 1840, which indicates that Ann was carrying him when they were married. It is conceivable that this is why they took the opportunity to move away from Hooton Roberts and to go to Wroot, where the other children were born.

Ann and Robert are shown in the 1851 Census, with their four sons Thomas, George, Charles and Henry. The entry confirms that Ann was born in Letwell about 1820, but states that Robert was born in Denaby about 1821. The latter information is a mistake in the Census and is not consistent with other information regarding Robert.

 By the time of the 1861 Census Robert and Ann had moved to Norton, Yorkshire.

Thomas and George had already left home by the time of the 1861 Census. Arthur had been born in 1858 but died in the same year.

Robert Glassby appears in the 1871 Census, albeit under a different name (Albert Clasby) due to a transcription error. Examination of the original hand written sheet confirms that it is in fact “Robert Glassby”. He was living at Pinching Street, Norton.

We know from the marriage certificate of William Glassby (B 9.5) dated 25th November 1874 that Robert and Ann were living in Norton Bar House, Norton, Doncaster where Robert was the Toll Bar Keeper. The 1881 Census confirms their place of residence as Norton Bar House in 1881, and this time Robert is described a general labourer.  

Turnpikes were an interesting and important feature of transport in England. In the 16th and 17th Centuries the system of statute labour was instituted whereby each individual had to provide three days labour for the maintenance of roads. This system failed and most roads were muddy and rutted. The Turnpike Acts of the 18th century transformed the quality of roads. Under this system local business men were empowered to charge a toll for using a road, and they used the money generated to maintain and improve that section. After 1750 there was a mania for turnpikes, and 870 acts were past in the 20 years after 1751. By 1830 there were 1,100 Turnpike Trust administering 35,000 miles of roads. The Doncaster & Selby Turnpike Trust opened a new road around 1820 around Askern, and it is thought that Robert Glassby was the Toll Bar keeper at Norton Bar on this road around 1881. The coming of the railways in the 1830’s and 1840’s saw the beginning of the decline of turnpikes. Revenues declined, trusts were dissolved and eventually in 188 the new County Councils took over responsibility for main roads, with Urban and District Councils being responsible for local roads.

It appears that Robert and Ann were still living in the Norton area when Ann died on 24th April 1889 at Campsall (a sub-district of Norton). She was 70, consistent with her being born in 1819. Her death was notified by Robert, described as a “Farm Labourer” indicating he was still working at the age of 78. Robert put an “x” on the death certificate as his mark, being unable to write. Robert is shown in the 1891 Census living with his son George and his family at 8 Beech Hill, Pontefract. Robert was 79.

He entered the Pontefract Workhouse where he died on 28th January 1900. He is described on the death certificate as a “Labourer of Pontefract” which suggests that he worked in Pontefract prior to entering the Workhouse.

Thomas, the eldest son of Robert and Ann Glassby, was born in Hooton Roberts and moved to Wroot with his parents. His father seems to have followed a tradition of naming his firstborn after his own father. There is an entry in the 1861 Census for a Thomas Glassby, who was working as a servant in the house of John Shortridge in Kimberworth, Yorkshire.

Thomas married Mary Ann Lindley in 1869 in the Rotherham area, and they went to live in Finningley, about 5 miles from Wroot. The 1871 Census shows that Thomas worked as an agricultural labourer.

They had two children.

At the time of the 1881 Census they were still living at Finningley and Thomas was still described as an agricultural labourer.

An agricultural labourer is defined as an unskilled farm worker and is a general term for someone working on the land. This does not preclude him from running a farm, whether or not the land was owned by someone else, and the fact that he had acquired a “farm servant” to help him, indicates that this is what he did.

Mary Ann died in 1884, aged 42 and was buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity & St. Oswald's Church, Finningley.

It is also interesting to note that there is a second “Glassby” grave at St Oswald’s adjacent to that of Mary Ann’s. It is the grave of a George Glassby, aged 18, who died in an accident at Thorne Station on 21st June 1877. He is listed in Chapter D.

By the time of the 1901 Census both Alice and George were married and had moved out, and Thomas had become the licensed manager of the Horse & Stag pub, at Bank End, Mission, which is the next small village to Finningley.

Thomas is shown at the age of 70 in the 1911 Census:-

Thomas died on 1st March 1927 at the age of 86. He left no Will and his son applied for Letters of Administration, as transcribed below.

Alice Lindley Glassby married Charlesworth Chester in 1891. Charlesworth was the son of Thomas and Hannah Chester who were both born in Finningley. Thomas Chester was a “Horse Keeper” and he and his wife seemed to have moved about the country. Charlesworth was born in Hayes, Kent and his younger brother James was born in Dulwich, Surrey. The family were living at 106 Commercial Road, Spitalfields, London, at the time of the 1881 Census. It is also possible that George Chester, the farm servant who was working for Thomas Glassby in 1881, was a relative.

By 1891, Charlesworth and his brother James had returned to live with their grandmother, Hannah Turner, and uncle, William Turner, a farmer at Baulk End, Finningley, where they worked as farm labourers.

The 1901 Census shows Alice and Charlesworth living at Railway Cottages, Snydale, Pontefract. Their youngest son was born 3 months earlier and his birthplace is given as Streethouse but it is likely to have been the same address. Streethouse is a small pit village in the township of Snydale.Their second son, Charlesworth Chester, died in 1895 before reaching his first birthday. It appears that they moved to Snydale between the birth of James in 1896 and Cecil in 1901, and that Charlesworth changed jobs.

Alice and Chester are shown in the 1911 Census with 5 of their children:

James Arthur Chester is shown as 5 in 1901 but does not appear in 1911, presumably having died between the 1901 Census and the 1911 Census.

George and Ann are shown in the 1911 Census:-

George was still working as a postman 29 years later when his father died, as shown in the Letters of Administration. He was then living at Woods Villa, Blaxton, another small village close to Finningley.

B 9.1.2.1 George Ernest Glassby (b.1895 d.1897)

George Ernest Glassby was born in 1895 but died in 1897 aged 1.

William Edward Glassby married Emily Curtis in 1922. She was the daughter of William George and Emma Curtis, née Laughton. All three were born in Haxey, Lincolnshire. They moved to Chapel Lane, Finningley, shortly after Emily was born. William George Curtis worked as a platelayer on the railway. William Edward and Emily had one daughter, Sylvia. Emily died on 25th August 1940 at the Royal Infirmary, Doncaster, and at the time of her death she and William were living at Wroot Road, Finningley.

She left quite a large estate for the time and William had to apply for Letters of Administration.

It was unusual for a married woman to have her own separate property or money, and given William’s job as a chimney sweep, it seems more than likely that she had received a legacy.

B 9.1.2.2.1 Sylvia Curtis Glassby (b. 1926 d?) m. 1951 Cyril R Craven

Sylvia Curtis Glassby was born in 1926 and married Cyril R. Craven in 1951.

Eric Arthur Glassby was born on 5th February 1907. He married Madge Watson in Doncaster in Q2 1931 and they had two children.

B 9.1.2.4 Cecil Henry Glassby (b.1908 d.1989) m. 1936 Muriel Maxfield

Cecil Henry Glassby was born in Doncaster on 31st July 1908 and married Muriel Maxfield in Doncaster in 1936. He died in Doncaster in January 1989.

George Glassby was born on 16th February 1843 in Wroot, North Lincolnshire. Little is known of his early life except that he trained as a wheelwright. There is a George Glassby in the 1861 census living at Blyth and apprenticed as a wheelwright to Joseph Swindin. Since the birth year is right, the fact that “Hooton” is mentioned and the fact that George Glassby went on to marry Elizabeth H Crompton from Blyth, this is almost certainly him.

He married Elizabeth Hannah Crompton on 1st November 1862 at the Parish Church in Doncaster. Elizabeth was the daughter of a Shoe Maker, John Crompton, and his wife Mary, who lived in Blyth, North Nottinghamshire. Their first child, Ann Glassby, was born in Blyth, and they went on to have a further nine children, although only four survived to adulthood. In the mid 1860’s George and Elizabeth moved to Pontefract where they spent the rest of their lives.

Their daughter, Ann, was missing from home, possibly staying with Elizabeth's relatives. The three other children born prior to 1871 had already died. The 1881 Census shows the family still living at Beech Hill:-

Due to a transcription error, George is listed as "George Glussty" in the computerised records of the 1891 Census.

George and Elizabeth are shown again in the 1901 Census

Ann and Fred having married and left the family home, George and Elizabeth are shown to be living with their remaining children, Willoughby and Maud. They are joined by Alfred (42 years old – hence born in 1859), George’s youngest brother, and a visitor Alice Whitaker, who was later to become the wife of their son Willoughby.

George died on 25th November 1903 in Pontefract, aged 60 years. His administration document is shown below. It shows that he was living in Belks Court and that he left £149-9-0 to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth died on 18th April 1906, aged 62 years, also in Pontefract.

Ann Glassby was born in Blyth in 1863. She lived with her parents, working as a dressmaker, until her marriage to William Edward Millett in 1883. They had one daughter.

They are shown in the 1891 Census living in Pontefract, and again in the 1901 Census. Little had changed by the 1901 census except that Maud Reeta was working as a Pupil Teacher

In the 1911 Census, William Edward Millett is listed at the family home in Ropergate, Pontefract, and his wife Ann is shown staying with her daughter, Maud Reeta Lorriman, as shown in the section below.

 
William Millett died in February 1943, aged 85 and Ann died on 6th December 1948, also 85 years of age.

Maud Reeta Millett was born in 1885. She married William Henry Lorriman, who was the son of a Potato Merchant and worked in the family business, in 1909. They are shown in the 1911 Census:-

They lived in Monk Fryston, Leeds and had one son. William Henry died on 4th February 1961, aged 80 years and Maud Reeta died on 8th September 1970, aged 85 years.

William Eric married Amy Sunderland and died on 24th April 1964, aged 48 years. They had one son:-

Fred Glassby was born in Pontefract in 1870 and became a joiner, serving his apprenticeship at Pease Midgley. He is shown in the 1891 Census living at 8 Beech Hill, Pontefract with his parents:-  

He married Ethel Mary Martin at the Ebernezer Chapel in Pontefract on 20th August 1892. Ethel was born in Pontefract on 4th July 1871 and worked as a Liquorice Cake Hand making the famous Pontefract Cakes. She was the second daughter of John Henry and Ellison Veitch Martin. Fred and Ethel had six children in all. They are shown in the 1901 Census living in Pontefract:-

Ethel died on 1st April 1905 , aged 33 years, after a long illness which was certified as "Phthisis Exhaustion", the old name for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Harold, Willoughby and Doris are shown in the 1911 Census living with Willoughby Crompton Glassby and his wife Alice, as shown below, as Fred Glassby had left and his whereabouts was unknown.  

No record has been found of Fred's death.

B 9.2.5.1 George Henry Glassby

George Henry Glassby was born on 15th Decemeber 1892 in Salter Row, Pontefract and died at the age of 3 in 1895.

B 9.2.5.2 Harold Glassby

Harold Glassby was the second of Fred and Ethel’s children, born in Pontefract in Q3 1895. He joined a local firm and became a plasterer. When WWI started he joined up and was assigned to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and served in Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq).
He returned home he married Florence (Florrie) E. Kerry in 1920. In 1927 they adopted a baby girl:-

B 9.2.5.2.1 Iris Christine Glassby, born 1927

Harold died on 14th February 1952, aged 57. Florrie married John W. Goddard six years later and died in 1964, aged 66.

B 9.2.5.3 Elsie Maud Glassby

Elsie was born on 20th November 1896 and died on 21st May 1906, aged 9.

B 9.2.5.4 Willoughby Glassby

Willoughby was born on 8th February 1899 and, from about the age of 7 years, was brought up by his aunt and uncle. He married Marion Slater on 2nd August 1941, and they had one daughter. Willoughby died on 4th March 1978, aged 79 and Marion died on 18th February 2003, aged 94.

B 9.2.5.5 Helen Glassby

Helen was born on 9th May 1901 and died in Q4 1902, aged 1.

B 9.2.5.6 Doris Glassby

Doris was the youngest child of Fred and Ethel, born two years before her mother died. Following her mother’s death, she was brought up by her aunt and uncle in Pontefract. She married Reginald Williams in 1922 (Ref: Q2 1922 Pontefract 9c 211) and they had two children:-

9.2.6 Ellen Glassby (b.1875 d.1878)

Ellen was born in Pontefract in 1875, and died in 1878 aged 3.

Willoughby Crompton Glassby was born on 3rd November 1877. He married Alice Whitaker in 1901, and they had four children. They are shown in the 1911 Census as follows:-

B 9.2.7.1 Annie Glassby

Annie was born on the 27th September 1906. She married Harold Thrall in 1939, and Harold was transferred to Stafford where they began their married life. They retired to Wakefield and Harold died on 23rd December 1991, aged 76. Annie died on 30th January 1999, aged 92.

B 9.2.7.2 Helen Glassby

Helen was born in Q1 1910 in Pontefract. She attended Teacher Training College in Darlington before starting her teaching career at Love Lane Junior and Infants School, Pontefract. She met her future husband whilst on holiday and they were married from her sister’s home in Stafford in 1947. Her husband, Ernest R. Tremayne, was a widower. He was older than Helen and had grown up children from his previous marriage that had already left home. They lived in Horsley, Gloucestershire until Ernest died in 1958, aged 72 . Helen returned to Pontefract and lived at the family home in Linden Terrace with her brother George and his family. She died on 13th September 1968, aged 58 years.

B 9.2.7.3 George Glassby

George was born on 18th June 1913 in Pontefract. He trained as an aircraft inspector and worked at a number of aircraft factories up and down the country. It was whilst working in Warrington that he met his future wife, Lilian Cordelia Kathleen Gilson, known as Delia, who was also working as an aircraft inspector. They married in Pontefract in 1945. They had two children.

B 9.2.7.4 Harry Glassby

Harry was the youngest of Willoughby and Alice’s children and was born on 20th March 1917. He was called up for service in WWII and married Joan Annie Wilson Meadwell in 1943. They had one son.

B 9.2.8 Louisa Glassby

Louisa Glassby was born to George and Elizabeth Glassby in 1880 in Pontefract, and was their seventh child. She is listed as “Lusia Glassby”, aged 1 in the 1881 Census, but died a few weeks after the Census was taken.

B 9.2.9 Maud Elizabeth Glassby

Maud Elizabeth Glassby was the eighth child of George and Elizabeth. She was born on 27th June 1882 at Beech Hill, Pontefract. She married Albert Webster in 1921. Albert died on 13th February 1936, aged 56 years. She married Ezra Naylor, a widower, in 1953 in Harrogate.

Maud died in Pontefract on 19th May 1959, aged 76.

B 9.2.10 George Henry Glassby

George Henry Glassby, their 10th child, was born on 12th November 1884. His birth certificate shows that the family were living at beech Hill, Pontefract and that George was a joiner at the time. George Henry Glassby died aged 1, in 1886.

B 9.3. Charles Glassby (b.1845 d.1895)

Charles was the third son of Robert and Ann Glassby. Most references to him show his name as “Charles Glasby” but we are reasonably certain that they all relate to Charles Glassby. It is thought that he was born in 1845 and he was baptised at the parish church in Wroot on 5th October 1845, with Robert and Anne Glasby being mentioned as his parents. There is no trace of his birth being registered, in common with his sister and brothers with the exception of Thomas.

Most of his life seems to have been spent as a miner in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield. In the 1871 Census he is shown as a lodger and a Coal Miner living in Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, with Ann Allen (Head of family) and her son Joseph (30) , also a coal miner. This shows his age as 25 years which would mean he was born between April and October 1845 (the date of his baptism).

In the 1881 Census Charles was still in Ecclesfield and still a coal miner, but he was in different lodgings. In this census his age is given as 32 years which is three years younger than he actually was assuming the 1871 census age is correct.

There is an entry for Charles Glassby in the 1891 Census at Campsall, Norton, Yorkshire which shows his age as 45, and his place of birth as "Shorne, Lancashire".

Everything on this census return points to it being Robert’s son except for the birthplace. The census image is virtually unreadable and it may have said “Wroot, Lincolnshire” which the transcriber has misread as “Shorne, Lancashire”. The only Shorne in England is in Kent which tends to confirm that it was a mistake. The age tallies with that shown in the 1871 census and is consistent with the date of baptism. The census address was Campsall, Norton and we know there was a family connection with this area. One of his brothers served his apprenticeship there, another married there and his parents lived there. Additionally the “In Memoriam” card sent out following his death described him as “Mr. Charles Glassby of Norton”. In the 1891 census he was living on his own and was not shown as having an occupation, nor is there any indication of how he was supporting himself. Since he died four years later it is possible that he had retired from the mines through ill health. There is no trace of his marrying in the records, and all the census returns show him to have been unmarried.

He died on 17th February 1895 in Pontefract, and his age was given as 48 years, which implies a birth date after the date of baptism, which cannot be.

Henry Glassby was born in Wroot in 1849, but by 1871 he was in the Census aged 22 living at Campsall, Askern, he was unmarried and was a shoe maker. Askern is close to Norton, where Henry’s father was the Toll Bar Keeper on the turnpike, as we shall learn from William Glassby’s marriage certificate later.

The 1881 Census shows Henry Glaseby (32 years of age) (note the different spelling) born in 1849 in Wroot, Lincolnshire, a boot and shoemaker living at 7 Walker Street, Thornhill, Yorkshire.

The IGI Individual Record associated with Henry Glaseby - headed Henry Glasby this time, (another transcription error) – shows that he was christened on 5th November 1848 in Wroot, Lincs, and that his parents were Robert and Anne Glasby.

Henry’s wife was Hannah Elizabeth Rutherford, born 17th January 1847 and the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Rutherford. Thomas’s occupation is described as “waterman”. Although she is “Ann E” in the 1881 Census she is “Hannah E” in the 1901 Census. Hannah and Henry’s first child was a girl, Annie, born on 19th September 1875 when they were living at Ingham Road, Thornhill Lees. Annie died in 1879. They had three boys between 1877 and 1889, and they appear in the 1891 Census:-

Following Henry Glassby through to the 1901 Census we see that he was still living at 7 Walker Street, Thornhill with his wife and the three children.

Henry is shown in the 1911 Census with one child, Charles, living at home:-  

Alfred Glassby was born on 24th August 1877. He married Edith Dixon on 30th May 1903, when he was 26 and she was 22. Edith Dixon was born on 6th January 1881 and was a schoolteacher at Lees Moor School.

Alfred Glassby worked at Samuel Firth Ltd, a shoddy manufacturer of Thornhill and Liverpool, as a bookkeeper. He joined them in 1895 at the age of 18, and was awarded a half-hunter gold watch for 21 years service in March 1916. They lived in Elmwood House, Slaithwaite Road originally, but moved to 49 Slaithwaite Road later.

Alfred and Edith were shown in the 1911 Census as follows:-

Alfred and Edith celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1953 and the following article appeared in the local newspaper:-

Edith Glassby died in 1960 at the age of 79. Edith and Alfred were staying with their son, Ronald Glassby and his wife Alice, in Stafford when she was taken ill. She underwent a hysterectomy in Stafford General Hospital, but developed gangrene and had to have her leg amputated. She died shortly afterwards.

Her obituary appeared in the local newspaper on 1st November 1960.

Alfred Glassby stayed at 49 Slaithwaite Road after Edith’s death, spending part of the winters with Ronald and Alice Glassby in Stafford. He died in Stafford at the age of 90 on one of the occasions that he was staying there.

Ronald lived with his parents in Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury and went to Thornhill Lees Church of England School. Leaving school he worked for Dewsbury Borough Treasurer’s Department, before moved to Stafford in the early 1930’s. He took a job in the Treasurers Office of Staffordshire County Council, where he stayed all his working life rising to the position of Deputy County Treasurer. This must have been quite a move in those days, to leave his native Yorkshire to move as far away as Staffordshire for promotion and advancement. Ronald married Alice Swift in 1934 and they had two children.

Alice, born on 31st October 1908, was the second child of Arthur Swift, a master baker, and Lilian Terry. In 1901 Census Arthur Swift was 22 and was living with his parents William and Susan Swift at 8 Bk Barber Street, Dewsbury. Arthur and Lilian married on 19th November 1901 in Dewsbury. Arthur died at the age of 45, and Lilian bought a shop at 25 Leeds Road, Dewsbury where she lived with Alice. Lilian married Mr. Thomas A. Thornton in 1932, and they lived at his house 268 Lees Hall Road, Thornhill Lees. Thomas Thornton died in October 1946; Lilian lived until the age of 72 and died in December 1952.

The wedding was reported in the local press as follows:-

PRETTY THORNHILL LEES CEREMONY GLASSBY – SWIFT Thornhill Lees Parish Church was the scene of a pretty wedding, which aroused considerable interest in the district, on Tuesday, the bridegroom being Mr Ronald Glassby, only son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Glassby, of Elmwood House, Slaithwaite Road, Thornhill Lees, and the bride Miss Alice Swift, only daughter of Mrs Thornton, of Lees Hall Road, Thornhill Lees, and of the late Mr. A. Swift. The bridegroom, who was formerly employed in the Dewsbury borough treasurer’s department, is a member of the Staffordshire County Accountant’s staff. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev J E Roberts (vicar) and appropriate organ music was contributed by Mr W T Swift (brother of the bride). The bride, who was given away by Mr. T. A. Thornton, was attired in a gown of ivory Chantilly lace, the train being cut in one with the skirt. Her real Brussels net veil was surmounted by a coronet of orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of red roses and lilies. Attending her was a matron of honour (Mrs C Pickles) and two bridesmaids (Misses Evelyn Fawcett and Norah Terry). The first two wore gowns of angel skin turquoise, blue lace over silk taffeta. They carried bouquets of pink roses. Miss Terry wore a gown of pale pink flowered georgette and lace, with a floral head-dress, and carried a posy of pink carnations. The bride’s mother wore a gown of Lido blue crepe de chine, with coatee, and hat to tone, while the bridegroom’s mother was attired in a gown of Lido blue georgette and lace with hat to tone. They carried bouquets of pink carnations. Mr C. Pickles acted as best man, with Messrs Frank Dixon and Charles Glassby as grooms-men, and Mr Lister Senior as usher. Following the ceremony a reception was held at Fullerton’s Café, Dewsbury. Mr and Mrs Glassby afterwards leaving for a honeymoon in London and the South Coast. They are to reside at “Alrona”, Castle Bank, Stafford. Amongst many presents which they have received are a canteen of cutlery from the Staffordshire County Accountant’s staff and a pewter fruit stand from Thornhill Lees Mother’s Union, of which the bridegroom’s mother is the enrolling member, and the bride’s mother an associate member.

Ronald went into lodgings at 44 Lichfield Road, Stafford initially, but in September 1934 bought house #40, Thorneyfields Lane, Castle Church, which was just being completed by local builder W. T. Scrase for the grand sum of £572. 3. 6. Alice and Ronnie lived there all their lives. Son David was born in 1937 and Alice and Ronnie played an active roll at Castle Church and in other social activities. The war approached, and despite his age Ronnie was called up as it progressed, joining the Royal Navy.

Ronnie was in Malvern from June to August 1944 at H.M.S. Duke, presumably training, and after that for a time at H.M.S. Demetrius at Wetherby. On November 13th 1944 he moved to barracks at Plymouth. His posting to H.M.S. Mayina, Ceylon, was then confirmed, and on Whit Saturday, 19th May 1945 they set sail on H.M.S. Enterprise, a 7,580 cruiser built in 1919.

Ronnie stayed in Ceylon for the remainder of the war, and at the end of the war returned home on H.M.S. Fencer, only to arrive in Plymouth in April 1946 to be quarantined on the vessel!

Alice died in Stafford on 14th December 1974 aged 66. Ronnie lived for another 19 years and died in Chelmsford on 27th November 1993.

Thomas Glassby, Henry Glassby’s third child and second son, married Annie Hobson, but they did not have any children. Their marriage certificate dated 12th March 1904 shows that Thomas Glassby (23 years old, a joiner journeyman) and Annie Hobson (24 years old, a blanket weaver) were married at the Wellington Road Chapel, Dewsbury. Thomas is recorded as living at Walker Street, Thornhill Lees, Thornhill, Dewsbury, and his father was Henry Glassby, shoemaker. Annie also lived in Thornhill Lees and her father was William Henry Hobson, a sawyer according to the marriage certificate.

William Henry Hobson is recorded in the 1901 Census, married to Ann Elizabeth Hobson and residing at Crow Royd, Thornhill. The 1901 Census lists two daughters: Martha Hobson aged 4 and born Thornhill, and Annie Hobson aged 1 also born Thornhill. William Henry Hobson is listed as a sawyer and labourer.

Thomas Glassby died on 13th May 1941 when living at 59 Elizabeth Street, Elland and is buried in Thornhill Lees Churchyard.

Henry and Hannah’s next child was another boy, Charles Glassby who was born on 12th December 1889.

Charles fought in the 1914-18 war with the Sherwood Forresters, including time at La Somme. He could speak German and acted as an interpreter when requested. He was gassed and suffered for a long time after the war. He returned to England towards the end of the war having been selected for officer training at Aldershot, but the war ended before his training was complete.

Charles married Doris Bamford on 25th May 1918, and they had one son, Kenneth born in 1925. Charles worked at Samuel Firth Ltd, shoddy maker, along with his brother Alfred.

William Glassby was born in 1851 in Wroot, Lincolnshire. The IGI Individual Record shows "William Glasby" (one “S”) christened on 17th October 1851 in Wroot and that his parents were Robert and Anne Glasby. So, we have a direct tie with George, Henry and Alfred.

He married Sarah Ann Poskitt in 1874. The marriage certificate is dated 25th November 1874 and shows William Glassby, 23 a bachelor and a labourer living in Norton and the son of Robert Glassby a Toll Bar Keeper. Sarah Ann Poskitt was a spinster living in Norton and the daughter of George Poskitt, a labourer. The marriage took place in the Parish of Campsall, Yorks.

The 1881 Census shows William Glassby, then aged 29. At that time he was living at Silcoates Road, Stanley Cum Wrenthorpe, Yorks, with his wife and 3 children.

There is a baptism record in the IGI records, Mary Ann Glassby, daughter of William and Sarah Ann Glasby, baptised at Warmsworth near Doncaster 27th April 1876.

It is interesting to note that George H. Glassby was born in Norton, but that Clarissa, who was 3 months old when the 1881 Census was done, was born in Bragg Lane End, Yorks. Bragg Lane End is part of Wrenthorpe, Wakefield, Yorkshire. This indicates that the family moved from Norton between 1878 and 1881.

A fourth child, John William Glassby was born on 26th March 1886 in Norton. He appears in the 1891 Census at Womersley, Pontefract, but is absent from the 1901 Census.

At the time of the 1891 Census, Sarah E. Glassby, 2 years old, was staying with George and Mary Rishel in Campsell, and was listed as their granddaughter. Mary Ann Glassby, 14 years old, born in Doncaster, was working as a servant to a family in Calverly, Bradford.

The 1901 Census data for William Glassby shows him living in Womersley with his wife and 3 children:-

William Glassby died in Dewsbury on 25th August 1931 at the age of 80 and is buried in grave CC18 in Thornhill Lees Churchyard. He was living at 232 Lees Hall Road at the time of his death.

Sarah Ann Glassby died on 29th December 1936 in Dewsbury at the age of 81 and was still living at 232 Lees Hall Road, Dewsbury at the time of her death. She is buried in Thornhill Lees Churchyard also.

B 9.5.1 Mary Ann Glassby

Mary A. Glassby was shown as 4 years old in the 1881 Census, so was born in 1877. She was born at Warmsworth, Lincolnshire. She was no longer living with William and Sarah Glassby by the time of the 1901 Census. In fact she married John Thomas Frazer in Pontefract in 1895 (Ref: Dec 1895 Pontefract 9c 213). They had seven children :-

George H. Glassby was born in 1878 and married Sarah Jane Stephenson in Q2 1900. He is shown in the 1901 Census with their first child, Eva. He was a grocer’s drayman.

They are shown in the 1911 Census as follows:-

George and Sarah Jane had eight children in all, all born in Pontefract, although the last child was born three years after George Henry Glassby’s death and it is unknown who the father was as she did not remarry.

George H. Glassby went to fight in the First World War late and near the end of the war. His death in 1917 is commemorated on a Honours Board in St Giles Church, Pontefract and on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Annie Nash was the divorced wife of Edward Arthur Nash, residing at The Horseshoes, High Street, Brampton. Her maiden name was Linford and her father was George William Linford, a printer (deceased). Brampton is very close to Huntingdon.

Winifred Glassby was born in 1906 and married Charlie Bulmer in 1931 in Pontefract. Charlie Bulmer had a son Bruce at the time of the marriage.

Irene was born in 1913 and her death was registered in the same quarter.

Wilfred Glassby was born on 17th June 1917 and married Frances Ellen Mortlock (born 26th September 1921) on 16th July 1942 in Grimsby. They had four children all born in Grimsby.

Wilfred died in Grimsby in 1965 at the age of 48.

B 9.6 Mary Ann Glassby (b.1854 d.1923)

Mary Ann Glassby was born in Wroot in 1854, and did not marry. She is not shown in the 1871 Census, but by 1881 she had moved to Dewsbury and worked as a housekeeper. She is shown in the 1881 Census employed as a “Gen Serv (Dom)” i.e. general domestic servant, in the house of James Smith, a Silk Dyer. Judging from the number of Smiths living in the house and their occupations, they must have been a wealthy family.

Frederick was born in Wroot in 1856. He later moved to Pontefract where he worked as an agricultural labourer. It is probable that he stayed with his elder brother, George, who was already living there. He married Mary Ellen Bradley on 20th April 1878. The marriage certificate shows that Frederick Glassby (22) of Pontefract married Mary Ellen Bradley (23) of Dewsbury at the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Pontefract. Frederick's father is listed as Robert Glassby, a labourer, and Mary Ellen's father is listed as John Bradley, also a labourer. The certificate is countersigned by Henry Glassby (Frederick’s brother) and Rachel Ann Horsfield. Frederick and Mary Ellen had 9 children.

Mary Ellen was living in Dewsbury prior to the wedding but the Census data shows that she was born in Knottingley, a small town about 3 miles from Pontefract. At the time of the marriage she had a 1 year old daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Bradley. Although there is no evidence that Frederick was Sarah’s father she did live with him and Mary Ellen and later added “Glassby” to her name. According to the marriage certificate, Mary Ellen’s father was John Bradley and the 1881 census shows a John Bradley, born Knottingley, living in Womersley with his wife, Mary. It seems possible that they were her parents which would explain how Sarah came to be born in Womersley.

The 1881 Census shows Frederick Glassby, aged 25, born in 1856 in “Root” (Wroot”) Lincolnshire, who was an agricultural labourer and was living at Baxtergate, Pontefract, Yorks with his wife and two children.

The 1901 Census shows the family had moved to another part of Pontefract, but at some time in between they lived at 23 Marlborough Road, Goole where their daughter, Evelyn, was born on 2nd December 1896. We know that they were in Pontefract in 1891 when their daughter, Minnie, died and that they had returned by 1898 when their youngest child, Cissie May, was born. After their return they lived at 2 Park Avenue, Pontefract.

Frederick had changed his occupation to “Agent for Sewing Machines”, which is how he was described on Evelyn’s birth certificate. Sarah had married and she and Ellen, who was about to marry, had left home. Two other daughters, Minnie born in 1881 and Evelyn born in 1896, had died in 1891 and 1901 respectively. The family then moved again, this time to Watergate, Pontefract, where they were living when Frederick’s brother George died in 1903.

Mary Ellen died in Pontefract in 1907 at the age of 52. After that Frederick and his unmarried children moved to the Barnsley area, where he remained until his death in 1938, aged 82 years. This move probably took place quite soon after Mary Ellen’s death, as the marriages of their children from 1908 onwards were held in Barnsley. This explains why Wilfred Glassby’s death in World War I is not recorded on the Roll of Honour in St Giles’s Church, Pontefract, along with that of George Henry Glassby. He had moved away from Pontefract almost 10 years earlier.

In 1900, Sarah married William Charles Delany, born 1871, an Army Sergeant (Gym Instructor) born in Mutton Cove, Devon, who was stationed at Pontefract Barracks. They lived at 1 Armstrong Buildings, off Wakefield Road, Pontefract. Armstrong Buildings was almost entirely populated by Army personnel and their families and was just across the road from the Barracks. Sarah and William had four children.

Sarah Elizabeth Delaney and her children are shown in the 1911 Census amongst 30 people living in Granby Barracks, Devonport under a Military Transcript. For the purposes of this write up just the Delaney family are listed below:-

She married William Arthur Hawkin on 27th May 1901. The marriage certificate lists Ellen as 21, a spinster and the daughter of Frederick Glassby (Agent) living at Half Penny Lane, Pontefract. William Arthur Hawkin is listed as 29, a wholesale druggist and the son of John Hawkin. They had five children between 1907 and 1921 as listed above. William is listed in the 1901 Census as a "Druggist" and his chemists shop was adjacent to the family home in Holgate Road, York.

George Harold Hawkin was born on 5th February 1911 and was a pharmacist with his brother. He died in 1994.

Minnie was born in Pontefract in 1881 and died in 1891 aged 9.

Arthur was born in Pontefract in 1883 and married Alice Hobson in Barnsley in 1908. He died at the age of 80 in Doncaster in 1964. Arthur and Alice had one child, Mabel.

Wilfred Glassby was born 1886 and it is thought married Gertrude Cartledge in Barnsley in 1910. He fought and died in the First World War like George H. Glassby. He died on 9th April 1917 when serving with the York and Lancaster Regiment and is commemorated in the Commonwealth War Graves website.

Wilfred and Gertrude had two children

Gertrude married Horace Liversidge in Barnsley in 1920.

Herbert Glassby was born on 9th March 1889 in Baxtergate, Pontefract and the occupation of his father, Frederick Glassby, is listed as “Wine Merchant Porter”. Herbert lived to the age of 5, dying on 24th December 1894 at Bondgate, Pontefract of pulmonary congestion/Tuberculosis/Cerebral Effusion. Frederick and Ellen’s faith must have been stretched to the limit with the deaths of many of their children, but for Herbert to die on Christmas eve must have been a great shock.

William Glassby was born on 2nd June 1890 in Pontefract and married Maud Lillian McCellan Logan in 1925 in Barnsley.

Maud died in Barnsley at the age of 68 in 1965, and her probate record is shown below:-

William died in Barnsley at the age of 93 in May 1984.More information about him came to light in August 2014 at the time of the 100th Year Commemoration of the start of World War 1. An altar piece was embroidered by 138 soldiers injured and repatriated from World War 1, and to celebrate the 100th Anniversary St Paul's Cathedral staff decided to contact the families of these soldiers.They all put their names into a book, and on a page for Netley's Royal Victoria Hospital is the name Pte W Glassby, York and Lancaster Regiment.

William Glassby's war records give detail of his life at that time. His medical records show that on 30th November 1914 he was decalred fit for the Territorial Force and joined the 5th York & Lancaster Regiment in Rotherham. He was 24 years and 5 months old at the time, and stood 5' 5'' tall. He was living at 29 Pond Street, Barnsley. He served for 5 years and 23 days and was discharged on 21st July 1920. His record is split as follows:-

He was injured in France and was repatriated to hospital in the U.K. His involvement on the St. Paul's Cathedral embroidery pice tells us that he did this whilst in Netley Royal Victoria Hospital. During the Crimean War the need for a military hospital became obvious, and one was planned at Netley, Southampton. Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone on 19th May 1856 and it opened in 1863. It became Britain’s largest military hospital with 138 wards and 1000 beds, and had its own 170-yard pier on Southampton water so that ships could unload war casualties straight to the hospital. The pier did not stretch out far enough into deep water, so a railway spur was built to Netley in 1900 to handle the casualties of the Second Boer War (1899-1900). Queen Victoria visited the hospital by sea from Osborne House on the Isle if Wight. The main site of the hospital was closed in 1958 and was destroyed by fire in 1963.

Other papers in William Glassby's records show that he was in Wharncliffe Hospital, Sheffield on 12th June 1920, where his condition was described as "GSW (Gun Shot Would) to Forearm caused by Active Service". We learn from www.wharncliffewarhospital.co.uk that "In the spring of 1915 the South Yorkshire Asylum, Wadsley, was offered to the War Office by the Asylum's Board, for conversion into a war hospital. The asylum patients were transferred to various asylum's, and the institution, now known as the Wharncliffe War Hospital, was handed over to the War Office on the 1st April 1915.

William Glassby's military papers also show that he contacted the War Office in 1926 when he was applying for a position as a postman. He had previously had his wallet containing his discharge papers and assessment of character papers stolen whilst he was in Leeds, and urgently needed replacements to proceed with his job application. It is easy to forget these days the importance of the discharge papers when returning to civy street.

Harold Glassby, born in Barnsley on 23rd December 1925, married Ivy Snowdon in Tadcaster on 16th March 1946.

B 9.7.9 Percy Glassby

Percy Glassby was born at Bondgate, Pontefract 9th June 1892, and died on 9th September 1892 aged 3 months. His death certificate shows that he died of Tabes Mesenterrea; the dictionary says that “Tabes” is emaciation or wasting and that “mesentery” is the fold of peritoneum attaching some part of the intestinal canal to the posterior wall of the abdomen. At the time of Percy’s death Frederick is shown as being a Sewing Machine Agent.

Harold Glassby was born at Bondgate, Pontefract on 2nd December 1893. He died on 22nd May 1895, aged 18 months, at Spring Gardens, Pontefract from Whooping Cough / Pulmonary Congestion.

Lawrence Glassby was born on 7th December 1894 at Bondgate, Pontefract. He died on 30th August 1895 at Spring Garden, Pontefract , aged 9 months, of diarrhea.

Eveline Glassby was born in Goole on 2nd December 1896, and died in 1901 in Pontefract at the age of 4.

Henry and Mary Deedes must have been quite wealthy to have had six servants in their London home.

 

He appears again in the 1901 Census, listed as the brother of George Glassby and living with him at Belks Court, Pontefract. It says he was 42 years old, was a general labourer and was born at Wroot, Lincs.

It describes him as an old age pensioner formerly a colliery tub repairer who was living at 14 Earl Street, Featherstone. He died of exhaustion due to gangrene following a fracture dislocation of the right ankle.
