Treviso

18th June 2024

Treviso is quite a convenient location to stay overnight if you are flying into Venice Marco Polo airport and do not want to go into Venice. It is relatively easy to get to by airport bus to Mestre Station, and then train to Treviso. However it is only a 25 minute taxi ride from the airport, and if there are 4 of you there is very little difference between the cost of the bus/train and the taxi (Euro 80-)

Treviso, a town founded by the Romans, had a great flourishing during the medieval periods and Renaissance. The medieval walls, built in the 12th century, were completely rebuilt in the Renaissance, reducing the number of town gates from 13 to barely 3 gates: Altinia (to reach Alyino on the south-east), Santi Quaranta (to reach Padua and Vicenza) and San Tomaso (to reach Conegliano and Udine).

A characteristic aspect of the town are its frescoes on the facades of old houses, along the portici and inside the churches. Another peculiar characteristic of the town is that it is traversed by canals and rivers. Botteniga, coming from the north, divides into three canals...... La Roggia-Siletto, Buranelli and Cagnan..... which traverse the town and then pour into the Sile River. Portico ai buranelli, the Pescheria and the Ponte Dante are some of the most characteristic places created by these canals.
