Hohe Tauern, Austria

The Practical

Our decision to go to Matrei in the Hohe Tauern, Austria, for a walking holiday was prompted by an email from the "Strollers", a walking group we met in the Picos de Europa in 2016. We had such fun with them then, and it was a pleasure to join them for a week in June 2018. Our bookings were made through Collett's Mountain Holidays. We were unable to get into the hotel where the "Strollers" were staying, Hotel Hinteregger in Matrei, but we managed to get a self-catering apartment for the period 14th to 28th June about 10 minutes walk away. Whilst it it is possible to get a transfer from Innsbruck to Matrei and to use buses locally, it is advantageous to have the flexibility of a car, and we hired a Skoda Octavia Estate at Innsbruck for the drive to Matrei.

The Hohe Tauern National Park was established in 1981, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the largest National Park in Central Europe, and straddles three provinces, namely Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol. With over 300 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters, the Hohe Tauern is Austria's rooftop, home to its highest mountain, the Glossglockner (3,798m) and its 4th highest mountain, the Grossvenediger (3,666 m). The crest forms the southern border of the Austrian state of Salzburg with Carinthia and East Tyrol, while a small part in the south west belongs to the Italian Province of South Tyrol.

Matrei is a small market town in the Lienz District of East Tyrol, 29km north-west of Lienz, with a population of approximately 5,000 people. From Innsbruck Airport to Matrei is 164 km and takes 2 hrs 45 mins by car via Wörgel and Kitzbühel (Michelin Maps). Just before arriving at matrei you pass through the 5.2 km long Felbertauern tunnel (Tariff 11 euros each way by car).

Collett's offer a number of easy, moderate and hard routes in the area as detailed below. Those shaded in grey are the particular walks that I did during the two weeks we were there. We were lucky in that the weather was fabulous and did not restrict our access to the higher areas, and we only had one wet day, the last day of our stay in Matrei.
