Trip to Provence, France

Nimes

On the border between Provence and Languedoc, Nimes is inescapably linked with twon things - denim and Rome. The latter's influence is highly visible in some of the most extensive Roman remains in Europe. Serge de Nimes, or "denim" is equally famous.

The focal point of the city is the 1st century Roman arena, known as Les Arenas. One of the best preserved Roman arenas anywhere, and capable of holding 20,000 spectators.

behind the arena is Maison Carree, a neat jewel-like temple built in 5 A.D. It is decicated to the adopted sons of Emperor Augustas.
