Orange was the former seat of the Counts or Orange, a title created by Charlemagne in the 8th century, and passed to the Dutch crown in the 16th century. Its most memorable member was Prince William, who ascended the English throne with his consort Mary.

Orange is best known for its Roman ruins; the Triumphal Arch built in 20 BC, and its Roman theatre, built into St Eutrope Hill
