Porta Vescovo from Arabba.

We had intended to take the main cable car up from Arabba to Porta Vescovo, opposite the highest peak in the Dolomites, the Marmolada. From 1,635 m in Arabba to 2,508m at Porta Vescovo, the cable car has a vertical ascent of 873m.

However this cable car was out of action so we took the adjacent Telecabina DMS Europa 1-2 which goes from 1,613m to Forcella Europa at 2,538m, a height gain of 925 m. This cable car is unusual in that it has a bend or "elbow" half way up, where the cable car detaches from the cable and reattaches to the cable around 90 degrees. You do not have to get out whilst this change of direction is happening.

The Marmolada, shrouded in low cloud

The chair lift station at 2,344m

We headed on the trail to Viel Dal Pan

Here we were faced with a slight dilemma. The instructions said to avoid the path going down the valley,
but the trail that contoured round and over a rocky knoll seemed indistinct (see red dots below).
Hence for safety we dropped down to determine the correct route
.

We decided to drop down to the wooden hut (bottom right) to determine the correct route

Lago di Fedaia

From the wooden hut we climbed up to the correct path, the one shown in red dots previously,
which was wider that it appeared at first sight......

........although there were obstacles to overcome

Looking back along the trail

Cloud billowing over the ridge to the right

Rifugio Viel Del Pan, 2,432m, eventually came into sight.

Another Strudel tasting!

Rifugio Federola (2,370m) in the dip (under reconstruction) and Rif Sass Beccel (2,423m) at the top.
By now there was thunder and it began to rain quite heavily.

Along the ridge to the left was Rifugio Belvedere and the cable car station.
We headed to Rifugio Belvedere to ride out the bad weather.

Heading down to Rifugio Belvedere

Good to be out of the driving rain inside Rifugio Belvedere

Their Strudel wasn't bad either!

A short walk to the cable car as it was thundering and lightening.
The cable car was temporarily suspended due to the weather.

The view down the cable car to Alba

After a wait of 30 to 40 minutes the lightening stopped and the cable car service resumed

The cable car later in the day when the weather had cleared
