Trip to Provence, France

Les Antiques and Glanum

Les Antiques and Glanum lies about a mile south of St Remy. Les Antiques is a triumphal arch celebrating the Roman conquest of Marseille, and a mausoleum thought to commemorate two grandsons of Augustus. Save for a certain amount of weather erosion, the mausoleum is perfectly intact; the arch less so, but both display intricate patterning and the unaesthetic proportional sense of the Romans.

Glanum is one of the most impressive settlements of France. The site was originally a Neolithic homested; then, between the second and first centuries BC, the Gallo-Greeks built a city there. The Gallo-Romans built on top of this from the first century BC to the third century AD.
